Blinds

Each played hand of Texas Hold 'em, Omaha and a number of other variations of poker start with two blinds – big and small. The play goes clockwise. First, the small blind has to be posted. The person sitting next to the dealer is responsible for the small blind. The next player that sits next to the small blind then posts the big blind.

The small blind is the lowest betting stake and the big blind is twice as big as the previous blind. Blinds remain constant in ring games. In tournaments they increase over time according to a pre-defined schedule.

After the small and the big blinds are posted, the action begins. First to act is the person next to big blind. This player may fold, call or raise the big blind. No checking!

Blinds are posted only in the first betting round at the beginning of each hand. After the players sitting next to the big blind have acted it’s the dealer’s turn to act. After the dealer has chosen his action it is time for the small blinds move. The small blind can fold, call or raise the bet, but no checking! Then the big blind acts by folding, calling, raising or checking. This ends the first betting round. The next and all subsequent rounds begin with the small blind.

You are required to post a big blind when you first enter a ring game, although you have the option of "sitting out" until the big blind reaches you.
